Let’s Get Organized | FrameworkFocus™

A Conversation on Organizational Involvement within LTC Pharmacy

In an all-new episode of Framework Focus, we delve into the world of organizational involvement and leadership in pharmacy with Tim Fensky, Associate Director of Advanced Wellness Pharmacy. Tim shares insights from his career journey from his humble beginning at a community pharmacy in Boston, Massachusetts.

“I was always supposed to be a doctor and my brother was supposed to be a lawyer. That’s what (my father) wanted,” Fensky joked. “So, I went to Northeastern (for pharmacy school) and my brother went into the construction business with my dad. So, he got one out of two.”

When he finished his schooling, Fensky began working at Sullivan’s Pharmacy. The owner asked Fensky to fill a vacancy on staff — which he agreed to do — but only for six months. Well, that six-month agreement turned into a 30+ career with Sullivan’s. Fensky was a key contributor in turning a small retail pharmacy into a 4,000-square-foot facility that does compounding, long-term care, hospice care, and multidose packaging.

After considering retirement, Fensky transitioned into his current role with Advanced Wellness Pharmacy. Like has throughout his career, Fensky is helping the pharmacy take the necessary and proper steps to grow the business.

Throughout the conversation, Fensky emphasized the importance of pharmacist engagement with professional and regulatory bodies such as State Boards, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP), and the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP).

Through compelling stories and lessons learned, Tim highlights the impact of organizational involvement on personal and professional growth. He offers practical advice on how listeners can get involved and make a difference in the field of Long-Term Care Pharmacy.

“It’s asking questions, it’s attending events, it’s collaborating, and you get to know people,” Fensky said. “I didn’t get to do all these associations without having colleagues have the trust and backing to do this. And even my employers… you have to have a lot of support to (get involved).”

“I think being part of organizations is so important and it’s hard to understand when we’re young in our careers,” Fulton added. “As we get older… it becomes way more evident… the importance of having good people involved in these organizations.”
