Electronic Prescribing updates coming in January 2022
Beginning in January, new electronic prescribing regulations will be going into effect across the nation. Here is a brief overview of e-prescribing legislation that will take effect in January.
California – Electronic prescribing will be required for nearly all prescriptions beginning January 1, 2022. The requirement does not apply to individuals under the jurisdiction of the Department of Corrections, along with several other exemptions. Notably, prescriptions for long-term care residents are not exempt. The law does not include a waiver provision for compliance.

Indiana – Prescriptions for controlled substances are required to be sent electronically beginning January 1, 2022. There are no exemptions listed for long-term care. The law allows for a waiver process, but does not specify the length.

Maryland – E-prescribing of controlled substances will be mandatory on January 1, 2022. However, prescribers may obtain a compliance waiver for up to one year. Furthermore, the law specifically exempts prescriptions for residents of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and hospices.
