2016 FWLTC Users Conference Keynote, Robert M. Wachter, MD

We are excited to announce our Keynote Speaker for the 2016 FrameworkLTC Users Conference. Robert M. Wachter, MD is Professor and Interim Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, where he also directs the Division of Hospital Medicine.

In the safety and quality arenas, he edits the U.S. government’s leading website on patient safety and has written two books on the subject, including Internal Bleeding and Understanding Patient Safety, the best selling safety primer. In 2004, he received the John M. Eisenberg Award, the nation’s top honor in patient safety. In 2015, Modern Healthcare magazine ranked him as the most influential physician-executive in the U.S., his eighth consecutive year in the top 50. He has served on the healthcare advisory boards of several companies, including Google. His 2015 book, The Digital Doctor: Hope, Hype and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine’s Computer Age, was a New York Times science bestseller. He is currently chairing a group charged by the UK’s Secretary of Health to advise the British National Health Service on its digital strategy.

Dr. Wacther’s keynote will focus on content from his new book. Everyone had high hopes that computers would be that magic bullet we’ve been desperate for to improve the safety, quality, and efficiency of healthcare. In the past 5 years – catalyzed by a $30 billion federal incentive program – medicine has finally, reluctantly, gone digital. Using a dramatic case in which a child received a 39-fold overdose of a common antibiotic, this talk explores some of the unforeseen consequences of information technology – including the movement to hire scribes so doctors and patients can look each other in the eye again, alert fatigue, and the tendency for clinicians to defer to a new kind of authority: an electronic one. It will also touch on core issues in medicine, such as what it means to be a doctor, patient – and pharmacist – in the digital age.

The 8th Annual FrameworkLTC Users Conference will take place this September 27-29th at the Grand Hyatt in San Antonio, Texas. Register today!
